Character Analysis and “Who is John Galt”

The novel begins by placing Eddie Willers, Dagny’s personal assistant in certain situations that show his character, his way of thinking and who he is. On the way to work, Willers has an encounter with a bum, who after receiving Willers’ charity asks “Who is John Galt”. For some reason, that question forces Willers to remember an oak tree, a subject he used as a symbol for strength. However, that tree was struck by lightning and destroyed. The direct train of thought from the question “Who is John Galt” to Willers childhood memory demonstrates that the question has something to do with despair and hopelessness.

From the start of the novel, the rivalry between brother and sister is evidently portrayed. Their way of thinking and running the business is completely different. Dagny is focused, determined and knows exactly what she wants. She wants the best for her company and is willing to do what it takes to reach the top, no matter the consequences. She is strong woman with a strong character; she doesn’t care about what others think of her. Jim, on the other hand is perceived as weak and needs others approval for his actions. He is loyal people who rather help his old friends and other small business owners, risking his own success, than abandoning them for someone bigger and better. Also, when Dagny wants to give Kellog a raise, he completely refuses and asks “Who is John Galt” almost as if to say, despair is unavoidable.

Hank Rearden is the typical hard working man whose life is solely based around his work. He believes he has earned his position, working 10 long years to get there. He knows he deserves it and wants to make the most out of it, but his family doesn’t understand. His family believes that he is selfish and doesn’t pay attention to them, although, it is obvious that Rearden cares for them, specially his wife. He just enjoys his work and likes doing things for himself as well.
