I have continuously commented on
the real-life comparisons that I see in the book created by Ayn Rand and I
believe that not only is the book making the problems apparent, but she is also
portraying the effects that will consequently take effect if the problems are
not dealt with. In the story, of course the reader sees the evil that is
present behind the disguised faces of the Union, Media, etc. However, Rand
tells us that the people actually in the story, who also represent the majority
of US citizens, have no idea what is actually going on and only see the parts
that the “organized groups”, like the ones I have stated above, want them to
see. In the novel, the people criticize Dagny and Hank constantly and anyone
who believes that what these two are doing is right and beneficial for the
community as a whole. The funny part of this ordeal though is that they do not
know exactly why they criticize. All they know is that political figures, such
as Dr. Potter from the Organization of Sciences, (or whatever it was called), told
them to hate the Rearden Metal and the new John Galt Line because of its
success and the people comply without question. Such stupid behavior can be
seen in the thousands of Americans today as well. It all starts with the new
Healthcare plan that President Obama wants to impose on the American people
which, by the way, has not even been fully read by the President himself.
However, because the amount of evil that this amendment could do to the
population far exceeds the good, the House, which is made up mostly of
Republicans, has repealed the bill. Now, the government has remained stagnant
because, the Republicans had to repeal all aspects of the government that
require funding in order to stop the bill from being implemented into America. So,
the Republicans have tried to negotiate with President Obama and the Senate,
which is made up of mostly Democrats, by saying that they would allow for
certain organizations to pass by, such as funding for military, public
transportation, etc. but postpone Obamacare for a year so that the House and
Senate can debate this bill without the people feeling the pain of a full
government shutdown. This was a perfect way of surpassing the government
shutdown and allowing the people to return to their normal lives but, the Senate
and Obama would not do it. Instead, Obama would rather talk with the President
of Iran than speak with the House and at the same time, have Iran hacked into
the archive of Marine Intelligence. So, on top of not being supportive of the
American people, he shows off his horrible foreign politicking skills and embarrasses
America in front of the whole world again. Good going Barrack. Now even though
all of this has taken place, the majority of Americans have no idea that this
has happened. They have been embarrassed by their President but have no idea. This
is based on the Media that I was talking about; they hid the truth from the
people who are clueless. A few news sources actually inform the people
correctly, but they are not enough. So, the people believe what the liberal
news channels tell them and the most recent headline was “Republicans refuse to
negotiate with Democrats”. What a load of sh*t, but most of the people believe
it and they hate and curse the Republicans and rally up behind the people that
are actually hurting them. The consequences that are to follow if the Democrats
actually succeed in passing this bill are shown on p. 268 when Hank and Dagny
drive by a rundown society that use to feel the wealth and success that the Automobile
Factory use to provide for them. However, because they ran it into the grown
the same way as the people of America are doing to their country by supporting
this bill which symbolizes the fake “equality” nonsense that the Democrats try
to impose, their society came crashing down and now everyone is dirt poor and
no longer even use money but a primitive barter system. This is what will come
to follow for America if the people continue to be ignorant and support the
wrong part of government.
I really like the point that Chow makes about how many people are unaware of why it is that they "hate" or "dislike" certain parts of the government or anything in general. It seems that most American citizens (or most people honestly- this is greater than America) just repeat the information given to them through the media. The masses are like a bunch of parrots just repeating what they heard on TV last night or what they read in the newspaper this morning so that they can feign the smallest sort of intellect. Honestly, I think that this is one of our greatest problems. We boast about the American way and this American intellect, when in reality, the most intellectual people in our society cannot even come to their own conclusions. If you REALLY listen to what people are saying it feels like they are, for a loss of words, regurgitating what they hear on TV. I know that people tell us that when we go to college we are going to learn so much about ourselves, but if that's true where does all this information go?! If we do learn so much about OURSELVEs and not the media, why does everyone repeat what the media says and not their own opinion. I think that people fear looking dumb so much that they would rather repeat what they heard than proclaim their own opinions.

ReplyDeleteI am in compete agreement with Chow and how society, in this case America, believes everything in the news without even doing a little research on the subject. I can feel Chow's irritation toward America while reading his post and must say i am quite irritated too by how things are going with the government shutdown and the constant arguments the Republicans and Democrats are having. Due to their arguments, the government is shutdown right now, affecting lives across the nation that have nothing to do with the subject. The people of America should learn how to express their own opinions and refrain from believing everything people tell you. We've been fooled enough by president Obama and it is time to show them that we've had enough. Until when will the government be shutdown? According to recent news, Obama doesn't seem to be willing to negotiate with the republicans, therefore, nothing may happen at tomorrow's congress session. I must say, America's government is embarrassing its people by the way things are going in Washington.
ReplyDeleteI was completely and utterly shocked about what you chose to write about. I know that I'm a crazy die hard socialist/ liberal/ democratic female or whatever other classifications one may assume I fall into, but I'll respond this wonderful post anyway. First of all I too agree with your comment about the media, but don't think that it only goes one way. There is a reason why some people only watch Fox News and why others think MSNBC. Many people make uneducated decisions based off of biased, media, and their family opinions, and I don't think that is ever going to end. Fox is still up and running, I think there is roughly around 50 million registered republicans, so I think your opinion is recognized and heard and some Americans are "awake" in your eyes, even though not everyone agrees (shocked to find out that Americans don't agree on the way government should run). Not every 'democratic' point of view can be perfectly justified but not every 'republican' point of view is bullet proof either. You seem just slightly agitated that people are blaming republicans for the government shut down...wait.... wasn't it the Republicans who refused funding on a bill already passed? No red flags on the government heading in the wrong direction for that one? Okay cool. Was it not President Bush who supported the bailout of auto companies? No, it couldn't have been a free market loving Republican! But when we pass the Health Care Reform Act, here come the slippery slope arguments, America is becoming a socialist mess under that crazy Obama right? In my eyes something is not adding up.
ReplyDeleteIf I am wrong about anything please let me know (no sarcasm), because I like hearing other people's opinion. Personally I don't think political parties are a good idea because it generalizes a bunch of opinions, many in which I don't agree with anyway.
