Unrealistic but Entertaining

When Dagny wakes up in Galt’s arms, the book started to seem fake. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the twist. When John Galt was revealed I was shocked. I never pictured this sort of outcome.  The idea that all these successful people living together are doing so under their own terms of life is interesting and entertaining. However, although the writing itself flows perfectly, for some reason, it feels like some of the events are forced.
It is unlikely that Dagny alone was the only one to survive such a “terrible” plane crash with only a minor ankle injury. A plane falls out of the air, something is probably broken. The fact that this territory is unknown to the outside world and can’t really be found is unreal.  Hank flying over the valley and not finding anything or crashing seems too coincidental. For me, the whole book seemed impressively realistic until this moment. In other words, I could actually see everything happening until now.
In addition to that, the reveal of what project x is further strengthened my opinion. The ability of a man made creation to shoot invisible sound waves killing and destroying anything in sight can be seen in many cartoons as well as movies, but never in real life. I am not sure if an invention of this sort exists, but I have never seen or heard of one which, in my eyes, makes the book lose most of its realistic approach and value.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading about Dagny’s affection towards John Galt. Since the beginning of the book I thought that Dagny would eventually meet Galt, but I never pictured her falling in love with him. Plus, I always figured that she would eventually get back with Francisco D’anconia, but obviously I was wrong. The way in which Rand describes Dangy’s feelings is intriguing. It is interesting how Dagny knew she loved him without even knowing his name or who he was. Although she made it less obvious, one can tell that Galt secretly loves her too. The words they shared and the way they acted around each other gave me the feeling that Galt wanted her, but I wasn’t completely sure until Francisco asked if Dagny could stay with him for the last week. Even though Galt let it happen, he seemed uneasy about it and would have rather had her stay with him.

  1. I agree with you here. The book is becoming very unrealistic. However, just like you i am still enjoying reading it. I will be the first one to admit that I started to get bored with the book during Part II. In Part III, Rand's addition of the plane crash (as unrealistic as the result might be) and of the utopian society was very good. Similarly to you I was not expecting for Dagny to fall in love with John Galt. Instead, I was expecting Dagny to end up marrying Hank Rearden after he finally divorces Lillian. I see why you were thinking that though. It was logical that she might go back and be with her first true love.
