I had memories from reading Red Scarf Girl in 6th grade this week. I had not thought of any connection with the two books until after the passing of Directive 10-298 in Atlas Shrugged, and the attitudes of the people after that. When I was in 6th grade I remember asking my teacher if the girl in the book was angry or upset with whats happening, and she said no. I was bewildered and could not understand how anyone could not be angry by getting their rights taken away. It seemed proper that I read that book at that time because I was reading from the perspective of a little girl like ji-li jang, just knowing right from wrong by what parents and teachers tell us, but at the same time I could not really tell what was going on or understand why. Atlas Shrugged has made it clear to me (by repetitively pounding the message into my head through the hundreds of pages) the dangers of imposing limits on what people can do in society, and how brainwashed people can become. The language used when describing the “deserters” in Atlas Shrugged, remind me of how they describe those who committed suicide and were denied funerals in Red Scarf Girl. It surprised me even more to see that the Cultural Revolution in China started in 1966, yet Atlas Shrugged was published in 1957.
Another book I saw a connection to was Frankenstein and our discussion last year on whether humans will be the cause from their own demise. The cause of demise we disused was in some ways opposite to what Ayn Rand described as the danger. Will we be like Dr. Frankenstein and produce something that will come back to destroy us in the end, or will the rules limiting people’s production end human ambition and our way of life? I'm still not sure if its more dangerous for humans to create anything we see possible, or to restrain humans from their natural curiosity. People like Dagny and Hank see no limit to what they can do in the world. We need people like them to create momentum in society. But the other side is a character like Frankenstein, creating something spectacular because he has the talent to do it, but it ends up ruining his life in the end. Certain technology like the 3D printers or drones are amazing and can change the world, but that capacity is not limited to just a positive side.
