With what is going on with the United States government today, it seems that Ayn Rand may be particularly spot on with what goes on when a government oversteps its boundaries; chaos. I cannot help but picture a board room full of overweight, pompous men, much like the famed cartoons of the big wig business executives and politicians in the 1920s, when new government directives are discussed lead by people like Wesley Mouch and Jim Taggart. It absolutely astounds me that Jim Taggart, a man of business would be okay with the fact that the directives will merely destroy his company. Government regulations prohibiting people from retiring or being let go is so incomprehensible to me living now in the United States. Much like in Atlas Shrugged, today’s government seems to have, over the last several decades, digressed from the small, less-powerful government as originally executed in the late 1700s. I can only compare what has happened in this book, a mirror image as what seems to be happening in today’s society, to a kid in a candy store. Once the child has a taste of candy, or in this case power, it wants more and more. Long gone are the days when the United States was viewed as a political entity that was controlled by the people, for the people. Instead, the government currently in play today seems to be for the government, by the government. The difference between an ordinary person and a governmental body (or those who represent it) essentially boils down to power and privilege. Obviously, a normal citizen hasn’t the sheer power that a government has. A normal person cannot issue directives or make a real difference in government, other than voting, if that even counts anymore. The leaders of the government of the United States, both in Atlas Shrugged and in the real-world, have become so entangled in their rules and regulations that they seem to have completely forgotten that they have anybody but themselves to answer to. The sad reality is that it’s true. There are very few people that understand what is actually going on in the government enough to say this isn’t right, and the people that do understand it, aren’t powerful enough to make a real difference. It is truly disheartening to see a country that was founded upon the principles of a republican democracy transform itself into a country run by a government that, upon failure upon failure, continue to ask more from its citizenry for future failures. Both the government in this book as well as the current government plaguing our nation have clearly overstepped their boundaries in all senses leading to an economic and social epidemic that will take decades upon decades, if ever, to fix.

ReplyDeleteI believe too that Rands position on the socialist government as it is transpiring today is dead on. America has always been known as a country of freedom and hard work ethic, yet this new idea of government is causing the complete opposite. Everyone is now a slave to their work, unable to quit and must submit to whatever the law demands. Like Davis pointed out, once someone gets a taste for power, they will always find themselves wanting more, no matter the cost. Due to the power hungry leaders, industries are falling apart and all of the great minds of the century are disappearing without of trace because they no longer want to be slaves. As much as the public and socialists want to believe that kicking out the "selfish workers" is a good thing, they are slowly crumbling apart and are too stubborn to admit that they are in desperate need of them. Rands purpose to this book was to show how messed up the socialist government is and I think she did an incredible job convincing us to hate all of those pompous fat slobs sitting in a meeting room.
ReplyDeleteDavis brings up many important ideas that centralize upon the book and the reality of what is going on in the government today. I cannot but help agree more to what Davis has to say, as time gradually passes the government continues to play a big role in the United States but it has only turned out to be consequential. They are destroying the economy, businesses and widening the scope of debt even when they collect more and more money. It really boggles my mind but it seems to be true, the reason behind this factor all comes into place with the secret behind the government. What is the government trying to do? No one knows exactly except those in power but it seems that they are only trying to protect themselves. The interests of the people really don’t have in influence in the government in barely anything. The only thing people can do now is vote, if that really even matters. If a person held good knowledge of what the government was doing and voted for someone, his or her vote would barely have any impact what so ever. It’s mostly because of all the ignorant Americans that vote and have no clue to what is going on around them. Take Obama for example he ran one of the biggest add campaigns the world has ever seen and promised to make “change” in America, during the first four years he did not accomplish much. Yet he ran for presidency again to sustain his power and people still voted for him, why? Well its because he was promoting to give everyone a fair and equal chance, exactly like in the book. Ignorant people also played a big roll in his re-election but it was also because Obama repeated over and over again what people wanted to hear, that he would do this and do that but in the end really nothing positive ended up happening.
