Dagny and Hank's relationship has changed greatly throughout the book. At first, the two have a purely work related relationship. This is greatly due to the fact that both of them have a business mentality, especially Hank. Also, both of them are very stubborn and only want things done their way. This plays a huge role in what eventually brings them together. Dagny's stubbornness is what maintains the relationship between Taggart Transcontinental and Rearden Steal. Despite Jim not wanting to create a partnership between the two companies, Dagny does it anyways.
The next step of the relationship happens when the two are at Hank and his wife's party. Hank gives his wife a bracelet made of the first order of Rearden Steal. This has huge sentimental value to him. However, his wife does not recognize this and states that she would rather have a diamond bracelet. Because of Dagny and Hank's similar way of thinking and connection, Dagny loves the metal bracelet and trades the much more expensive and elegant diamond bracelet for it. It is my opinion that this was the turning point in the relationship.
When they are in Colorado together, Dagny asks Hank if she can have a ride home and he lies to her and says he is going to Minnesota and not back to New York. It is my opinion that he lied to her out of love. He probably was trying to decide what to do as he is still married. However, there relationship then changes forever as they express there love for each other at the end of chapter VIII.
