Although I am happy that Hank and
Dagny finally got together, I feel that their relationship has evoked a sort of
depressing, emotionless tone to the readers. Both Hank and Dagny are powerful,
successful, and intelligent business owners who are constantly admired, or
criticized, by the public. Their priority is prosperity and success, and they
let nothing get in their way when it comes to achieving their goals in the
industrial world.
It is clear that Hank and Dagny
have strong sexual tension, and that they both want nothing but physical
pleasure from each other. The fact that their relationship is so detached made
me contemplate whether or not Hank and Dagny are capable of caring for one another; or anyone else for that matter.
Nevertheless, Hank feels guilty for cheating on his wife, and shows that he
regrets it at one point. But this regret quickly fades away when Dagny tells
him she doesn’t want a relationship with him; she just wants sex.
The two leaders of this industry
are so infested in their work that they are losing touch of the important
things in life. Hank could care less about Lillian, and Dagny has no interest
in pursuing a relationship with a man. The only thing the both of them want is
for their businesses to prosper and grow. Despite the fact that they are not
inclined to start a relationship at this point in the book, I feel that they
will eventually develop stronger feelings for each other that will go past
their physical attractions, which will complicate things and simultaneously
make the book even more interesting.
