Atlas Shrugged
Successful rich people vs. everyone else
After reading many chapters in Atlas
Shrugged I begin to notice the hatred people have towards the successful and
wealthy business owners. The business owners that I am referring too are Dagny,
Hank and Francisco. For Dagny, when she finished the John Galt line everyone
was so surprised when her idea turned out to be successful. Dagny was
criticized by everyone even the government during the construction of her line,
when it was complete she proved everyone wrong. Many people including Liddian
were determined to scorn her and view her as greedy because of the millions of
dollars she was going to win with the completion of her line. Her own brother
even insults her calling her “a hard, insensitive woman who spends her life
building tracks and bridges.” Jim can’t help it that her sister is much
brighter than he is in terms of earning money. So he looks towards adapting a
good relationship with the public and viewing money as “the root of all evil”
because that is what her sister can’t do. This is also a problem the public has
towards the other successful business owners. Instead of congratulating their
hard work and achievements they try and convince them that what they are doing
is wrong because they are not giving enough of their money or business to the
betterment of their society as a whole. Hank is the person that is mostly
criticized because of this idea. He created the most efficient metal the world
has ever seen, but yet he is hated by most of the public, why is that? Well
because most people in the book think that Hank is using the metal just to
increase his profits and not giving enough to others. People also think he is
not giving smaller business owners a chance to survive. As for Francisco,
people hate him for having established successful copper mines all over the
United States. I mean a lot of people hate him, but the only people that are
entitled to hate him are his stock investors. Francisco blatantly wasted their
money on purpose when they were trying to increase their revenue. I believe
people should start thanking these major business owners instead of criticizing
them because they provide jobs, money, supplies and a better economy for the
United States.
