I believe most of us would consider Dagny, Rearden, and Eddie as the innovators of their society while the public and the competition as the skeptic followers. While the innovators are 100% confident that their new line will work, made out of Rearden Metal, the rest of society, not including the loyal workers/retired workers of Taggart Transcontinental, disprove of the project, and believe it will be a complete failure.
This scene is a common scene in life. Whenever a new innovation is being brought up, the majority of society is not going to support it, however, if there are believers in the new project, they will support it, but secretly. Many of the competition of Taggart Transcontinental are investing on the company under different names because they do believe it will succeed, however, being competition, or in the case of failure, they do not want their names connected to TT a all. Therefore, in the present, they will always say negative remarks about the new project, however, as soon as it proves itself a success, they will dramatically shift their opinions to a remark similar to "I always knew it would be a success".
Society will follow what has proven to be a success. Once Dagny and Rearden prove that their hard work has brought them success, the followers will emerge, and everyone will want to share the success Dagny and Rearden are experiencing first hand.
