Reaction to first 250 pages
So far I am about 20% through Atlas Shrugged and I am hooked. To be honest when I walked into class and saw that massive book on my desk I was in shock at the fact that I would have to read that. However as I got into it I realized that reading this book is a pleasure. Dagny inspires me not only because of her dedication and her lack of care for the beliefs of trivial people who are envious of her success. Dagny along with Hank Rearden are what I believe to be the model business people. The John Galt line is the perfect example of human ingenuity and belief in ones own creativity. Dagny and Hank revolutionized the transportation industry in the United States during their time. Another thing I like about the novel is the way Rand criticizes the people who believe that nobody should have an unfair advantage. I agree with her that hard work and dedication and competition are good for the economy. Laws that attempt to stunt a person or company's ability to grow and profit from their hard work according to Rand ruin the economy because they put the wrong people in charge of the company's that run the activities of this country. Rand's idea of objectivism correlates with what I believe is the right way to run the country, and that is that individual talent and hard work should be what determines a persons power and ownership of a company, not laws or any other outside forces.
