My perspective on Dagny

Wendell Pfeffer
English
Reaction on Dagny

Dagny has grown to become a woman unlike any other. She is vice president of Taggart Transcontinental and has found a way to grow her company to a grand measure despite the difficulties. Her brother even begins to envy her success: “ My dear sister does not happen to be a human being, but just an internal combustion engine, so one must not wonder at her success.” James does not credit Dagny for the work she has done due to the fact that she is a woman; there was an immense amount of inequality between women and men during the time period inside the story. Women were undermined and were considered to be unfit for a high position in work. James thinks that her sister is taking his place; despite the many succession of times Dagny has saved the company.
Dagny knows what her company needs; when she chose to work with Rearden metal she knew that there was no other metal that would last longer. The State Science Institute even goes against it by trying to do anything possible to get it off the market. They even try to bribe Hank with millions of dollars. Unfortunately the State Science Institute halts the production of the John Galt line by refuting the completion of the branch. They even convince the people that the line is too dangerous to ride. Dagny out of desperation resigns from her position and appoints Eddy Willers as the new Vice president of Haggart’s Transcontinental. She creates her own company, financing and “acts as her own contractor.” Dagny successfully finishes the line and rides it proving to the world that her line is safe. Dagny’s determination and willingless to never give up is proven in the final pages of 223, she has grown to become an inspiration to us all!
