Fear of the unknown can conquer society and lead us to doubt our choices. Once society has made its decision, it is nearly impossible to go against it.
Hank and Dagny began their vision with determination and dedication and refuse to let it fall due to the uncertainty of cowards. Willing to take the biggest risk of their lives, they search for loopholes through obstacles the public shoves in their way. "For the moment, with unnatural clarity, with a brutal simplification that made it almost easy, his concsiousness contained nothing but one thought:It must not stop me." (page 201) Their bravery makes them an unyielding force, for they are the only ones who are positive that they will not fail.
However, the rest of the world finds themeselves in the dark, undeciding of whether success will be in their favor. Their rejection of the plan transpires from fear and the unwillingness to advance in something that could possibly change the world for the better, or, in their eyes, potentially end it. "Men are not open to truth or reason. They cannot be reached by a rational argument.... If we want to accomplish anything, we have to deceive them into letting us accomplish it. Or force them." (page 180) The public has neither facts nor assurance and are beyond deceiving. Consequently Hank and Dagny have no other choice but to force it upon them.
It exhausts a lot of strength to swim upstream and I doubt that any other person, or persons for that matter, could have made the strenuous effort to accomplish what Hank and Dagny are attempting at. Their robotic natures and detached interests in the opinions of society bestows them the aid necessary in their struggles.
